Chair (Full Professor) in Social and Economic History of the Early Modern Period

Utrecht University is searching for a full professor on the ‘Social and Economic History of the Early Modern Period’ as of May 2024. The chair will be embedded in the renowned Economic and Social History (ESH) section at the Department of History and Art History 

(GKG). The newly appointed professor is or aspires to be at the forefront of their field of study. The chair will play a prominent role within GKG and the university’s strategic themes, most notably Institutions for Open Societies and Pathways to Sustainability 

In this capacity, the chair should have, or develop, a research agenda that is interdisciplinary and fits within and contributes to the research programme of the ESH section. This programme is transnational, long-term and comparative in nature. Teaching and supervision will involve the History Bachelor and (Research) Master programmes of GKG and possibly also the Philosophy, Politics and Economics Bachelor programme.

Qualifications

The chair will:

  • supervise and initiate research and publish internationally on social and economic history, especially of the early modern period, and collaborate with researchers (inside and outside the Faculty of Humanities) within the strategic themes;
  • teach and supervise in the History Bachelor and (Research) Master programmes of GKG and possibly also in the Philosophy, Politics and Economics Bachelor programme and contribute to educational (renewal) initiatives.
  • generate societal impact in their research and teaching and involve societal partners in this;
  • take up management tasks and board functions within the ESH section, Department and/or strategic themes.

The successful candidate:

  • is or aspires to be at the forefront of the field of social and economic history;
  • has an excellent publication record in social and economic history, especially of the early modern period;
  • shows potential for doing multi- or interdisciplinary research;
  • has a keen eye for the societal relevance of the research in their field, and actively seeks to contribute to public engagement/outreach;
  • has demonstrable experience in acquiring additional and external funds;
  • has extensive experience in academic teaching at all levels;
  • has experience in leading a research team and in successfully supervising PhD candidates;
  • is expected to be proficient in both Dutch and English
