Call for Papers 20th Biennial Interdisciplinary Conference of Netherlandic Studies (ICNS)
On Friday, June 5, and Saturday, June 6, 2020, the biennial Interdisciplinary Conference for Netherlandic Studies will take place in Berkeley, California.
The conference focuses on the wide scope of Dutch Studies, across all fields (art, history, literature, linguistics, etc.) and across the globe. You are invited to submit paper proposals in the following areas:
– Dutch literature and its international circulation;
– Dutch/Flemish art;
– Dutch linguistics;
– (Art) History of the Low Countries and colonial regions.
Topics of general sessions might include: History: Early-Modern, 19th- & 20th-Century Literature, 16th-Century Art & Literature, Colonialism, Early-Modern Literature, 20th-Century History, Early-Modern Art History, 17th-Century Art, Afrikaans, Linguistics, 20th-Century Film, 19th- & 20th-Century Literature, and Local Dutch-American History.
Select papers may be included in a conference publication to follow. Graduate students are especially encouraged to participate. Four travel grants of €500 each will be awarded to graduate students who present a paper.

Keynote speaker: Jan de Vries, Professor of Late Modern Europe at the UC Berkeley Department of History. We honor Professor De Vries for his groundbreaking scholarship in Dutch history and lifelong support to Dutch Studies. Introduction: Em. Queen Beatrix Professor Johan Snapper.
Workshop for Dutch Language Instructors (by invitation only) on Thursday June 4, 2020 at 10am: “Teaching Language & Culture with Film in a Multiliteracies Framework” by Mark Kaiser, Associate Director of the Berkeley Language Center.
Workshop Early Modern Dutch Handwriting and Archival Research (open to all) on Thursday June 4, 2020 at 3pm by Jesse Sadler.
Campus Tours with highlights of the Berkeley campus, including a Library Tour by Steve Mendoza, Selector, Curatorial Assistant & Reference Specialist for the Dutch collection.

Submission and Registration:
For consideration, please submit an abstract of 250 words and a one page bio to eham@indiana.edu with “ICNS Abstract” in the subject line by November 1, 2019. Late submissions are allowed until December 1, 2019. Acceptance notifications will be given by December 15, 2019.
