Background and Key responsibilities

Leiden University’s Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) is inviting applications for a full-time Assistant Professor position in Intelligence and National Security.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrable research record in themes related to the vacancy and a strong teaching background in intelligence and security, or a related field, as well as in topics related to the Institute’s Bachelor’s and Master’s programme offerings. The position is aimed at strengthening the Institute’s teaching, research and grant-acquisition capacities in a phase of growth and exciting interdisciplinary research opportunities.

The successful applicant will be part of an ambitious and dynamically growing Institute and is expected to:

  • conduct independent research in the fields of intelligence and security studies.
  • support the ongoing development and implementation of ISGA’s research strategy by publishing in leading international outlets and by attracting research grants
  • teach in the Master’s programme Crisis and Security Management
  • teach in the Bachelor Security Studies, or the minor Intelligence Studies
  • contribute to the development of new courses or programme offerings at the graduate or undergraduate level;
  • participate in committees related to functioning of the Institute and its programmes;
  • supervise theses;

Requirements

Selection Criteria

  • PhD degree in International Relations, History, Political Science, Law or any field with a significant bearing on research related to intelligence and security issues.
  • Strong research qualities manifested in an established or developing publication record that includes publications in international peer-reviewed journals in areas broadly related to intelligence and security. We welcome applications from researchers with any research focus that is relevant to the field of intelligence studies, but would be particularly interested in recruiting an applicant with experience researching or teaching Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) techniques.
  • Demonstrable experience in – and passion for – research-led teaching;
  • Applicants must be able to teach in English;
  • Ability to connect academic research to policy-oriented impact;
  • Strong policy network in the area of Intelligence and National Security
  • Demonstrable commitment to contributing to public debate related to Intelligence and National Security
